Mizo body seeks NSCN’s help for assembly elections

19 September 2008 2 Comments

AIZAWL: Mizoram People’s Forum (MPF), a conglomeration of major churches and NGOs, has sought the help of NSCN-IM to persuade militant groups not to interfere in the state’s assembly elections later this year.
Senior MPF vice president Zosangliana Colney and general secretary Lalbiakmawia Ngente met top NSCN-IM leaders V S Atem and Lalhminglien in Kolkata Monday, MPF sources said.

Colney, a senior leader of the Mizoram Presbyterian Church, said “We sought NSCN’s help to ensure that no armed insurgent group from neighbouring states interfere in the coming assembly elections.” He said the NSCN leadership has assured of help.

Asked whether the MPF would hold talks with other groups in neighbouring Manipur, Assam and Tripura, Colney said it might be done if the need arose.

He said the MPF wanted free and fair and peaceful elections in the state. PTI
