Nagaland favours TN education model

12 November 2008 No Comment

KOHIMA: Several academics, social activists and the officials from Nagaland have recommended that the state should adopt Tamil Nadu’s activity-based education model on a pilot basis in the state.

The recommendations were made at a day-long seminar on “Quality Education and Challenges in Nagaland” organised here on the occasion of National Education Day on Tuesday.

The seminar was attended by several government officials, academics, teachers and NGO representatives.

It was pointed out that Tamil Nadu successfully launched the activity-based educational system which follows “principles and practises of learners-centred education”. The model has gained national acclaim and received Prime Minister’s Award.

It also suggested that since private schools in Nagaland catered to more than half of the students, so the government should extend generous financial assistance to the private schools.

It also suggested to increase grants-in-aid so that a sizable portion could be extended for teachers welfare, pointing out that the search for a quality education would be futile without good teachers.

State Project Director of Training, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA), Kevi Liegise insisted on a paradigm shift in strategies and actions to impart quality education in Nagaland.
